Training Courses Delivered by Drugaid

Drugaid aims to provide a wide range of training, education and awareness raising to anyone who works with or is affected by the issues surrounding substance use and misuse.  We have a reputation for delivering high quality training, all of which is reularly reviewed by our experienced training team, to make sure they remain up to date, accurate and interesting.

Entry - Substance Misuse Information 1 Day

Aimed at those who require a very basic knowledge of substances. Includes:

  • Information on substances which includes their appearance, category, classification and general effects
  • Basic information on alcohol and its effects
    DANOS codes:
    • AA1 Recognise indications of substance misuse and refer individuals to specialists
    • AD1 Raise awareness of sustances, their use and effects

Intermediate - Substance Misuse Issues 2 Days

Aimed at those who may come into contact with substance misusers who require basic knowledge. Includes:

  • Information on drugs and alcohol and the effects of substance misuse
  • Drugs and the Law
  • Attitudes to substance misuse
    DANOS codes:
    • AA1 Recognise indications of substance misuse and refer individuals to specialists
    • AB5 Assess and act upon immediate risk of danger to substance users
    • AD1 Raise awareness of sustances, their use and effects

Advanced - Working with Substance Misuse 2 Day

Aimed at those working regularly with substance misusers, this course looks more in-depth at the way we work with substance misusers. We recommend that candidates complete Intermediate level before attending the advanced level courses. Includes:

  • Developing inter-personal skills
  • Assessing the impact of Substance misuse
  • Using the Cycle of Change
    DANOS codes:
    • AB5 Assess and act upon immediate risk of danger to substance users
    • AH10 Employ techniques to help individuals adopt sensible drinking behaviour
    • AB2 Support individuals who are substance users
    • HSC31 Promote effective communication with, for and about individuals

Alcohol Awareness 1 Day

Aimed at those who may come into contact with Alcohol misusers who require knowledge. Includes:

  • Information on alcohol and its effects
  • Information on physical, social and emotional effects of alcohol misuse
    DANOS codes:
    • AA1 Recognise indications of substance misuse and refer individuals to specialists
    • AH10 Employ techniques to help individuals adopt sensible drinking behaviour

Alcohol Awareness in the workplace

  • to examine and explore attitudes to alcohol and people who use alcohol
  • To look at signs and symptoms of use and misuse
  • To provide information on physical, social and emotional effects of alcohol misuse
  • To practice techniques from the alcohol awareness workbook
  • To enable participants to pass on knowledge about alcohol misuse to others
    DANOS codes:
    • AA1 Recognise indications of substance misuse and refer individuals to specialists

Alcohol and young people 1/2 day

Aimed at anyone working with young people, who would like to know more about the issues of underage drinking and how to work with young people.

  • Long and short effects of alcohol use
  • Tackling the issue of drinking amongst young people

Basic drugs awareness

  • To look at signs and symptoms of use and misuse for certain substances
  • To provide information regarding the classification of drugs, their legal status, appearance, street names and trends
  • To provide information on physical, social and emotional effects of substance misuse

Basic drugs awareness for parents/foster carers

  • To look at signs and symptoms, appearance, stret names and trends for certain substances
  • To provide information on physical, social and emotional effects of substance misuse
  • To explore ways of approaching the issue of substance use with young people

Brief Interventions

  • Introduce participants to Brief Interventions
  • Discuss who is suitable for Brief Interventions and when to use them
  • Practice a number of Brief Intervention techniques and tools

Groupwork Skills 1 day

Aimed at those who run groups or are looking to start up a group

  • How do groups work
  • Methods of working with groups
  • Barriers to good group work

Motivational Interviewing

  • To provide a brief history of research in addiction behaviour
  • To understand the principles and theory of motivational interviewing
  • To develop and practice micro skills of motivational interviewing
  • To develop and practice strategies of motivational interviewing
  • To use motivational interviewing skills for assessing motivation and current stage of change
    DANOS codes:
    • AB2 Support individuals who are substance users
    • A11 Counsel individuals about their substance use using recognised theoretical models

Substance misuse and domestic abuse

  • To explore the links between substance misuse and domestic abuse
  • To look at ways in which substance misuse can affect victims of domestic abuse and vice versa
  • To discuss safety planning

    • HSC335 Contribute to the protection of individuals from harm and abuse

Train the trainer

  • To gain a better understanding of the role of the trainer
  • To develop new and existing skills in the development and delivery of training
  • To increase awareness of learning styles and how to adapt to them
  • To examine training methods and their suitability

Working with parents who use substances

  • To consider Hidden Harm in relation to the impact on children
  • To consider helpful approaches for working with substance misusing parents

What does it cost?

Cost of in-house training is for a maximum of 16 participants and includes participant packs and, where applicable, OCN accreditation and enrolment. The costs quoted below do not include venue hire, refreshments or lunch so these elements, if required, must be organised separately.

One day - £700
Two day - £1100

That's just £43.75 per person, per day!

PLEASE NOTE: Bespoke training may incur additional costs, dependant on time taken to design courses and to cover any additional staff and resources required. We will always keep any additional costs to a minimum and will discuss them with you beforehand.

Drugaid is an approved and recognised Open College Network accreditation provider and we accredit our training through Agored Cymru (formerly OCN Wales).
